When it comes to home design and renovation, baseboards might not be the first thing on your mind—but they can have a powerful impact on the overall look and feel of your space.

When it comes to home design and renovation, baseboards might not be the first thing on your mind—but they can have a powerful impact on the overall look and feel of your space. The right baseboard adds polish, defines the style of a room, and creates a seamless transition between your walls and flooring. We know that selecting the perfect baseboard can feel overwhelming, which is why we’ve made it simple with expertly curated profiles, heights, and materials that work together to bring your vision to life.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to choose the right baseboard for your home, considering key elements like design, height, and material.

Why Baseboards Matter

Baseboards aren’t just functional—they’re a design element that frames every room. A well-chosen baseboard can:

  • Elevate your home’s interior design

  • Tie together your moulding and trim elements

  • Protect walls from scuffs, dents, and everyday wear

Whether your home is modern, traditional, or somewhere in between, there’s a baseboard style that fits your space perfectly.

Step 1: Select the Right Baseboard Profile

Your baseboard’s profile defines its aesthetic. At Royal Door & Trim Supplies, we’ve created seven baseboard design packages to suit every design preference. Each package offers a unified look that pairs your baseboard with compatible casing, shoemoulding, and trim elements for a cohesive feel throughout your home.

Here’s a breakdown of the styles:

1. Step Bevel

A clean, transitional design that works well in any type of home, from both modern and classic homes. This profile has subtle details for understated elegance.

2. Sleek Bevel

A slightly more refined take on the Step Bevel, with a smoothed out step detail which is ideal for homes looking for a hint of luxury while maintaining simplicity.

3. Step Inspired

It combines a consistent line with a smooth bevel to create a multifunctional trim which works with traditional and modern elements, this package is perfect for any style of home.

4. Modern Flat

Minimalist and bold is the best way to describe it, the Modern Flat profile is perfect for contemporary homes. It offers a clean line with no extra detail, letting the architecture speak for itself.

5. Modern Groove

Similar to the Modern Flat, but with a single groove added to capture the eye in such a small detail. This profile does not lose that minimalist look but instead enhances it.

6. Colonial

A classic and timeless choice. This profile has more curves and detailing, suited for traditional and heritage homes.

7. Ornamental

For those who want to make a statement, Ornamental baseboards offer intricate designs that add depth and character.

If you’re unsure which design fits your space, samples are available at our Royal Door & Trim Supplies showroom at 280 Basaltic Road, Concord ON. Take home a few options and see how they work with your walls, floors, and furniture.

Step 2: Choose the Ideal Baseboard Height

Baseboard height plays a critical role in balancing proportions within your room. Each one of our packages comes in three standard heights of baseboard:

  • 5 ½” Baseboard

  • 7 ¼” Baseboard

  • 9 ¼” Baseboard

Here’s how to decide which one is right for your space:

For Doors 80″ to 84″ Tall:

A 5 ½” baseboard generally looks best. It aligns well with the bottom rail of the door and doesn’t overpower the space. This is a safe, standard choice for most homes. This is also the most economical option of baseboard.

For Taller Doors (90″ to 96″):

Opt for a 9 ¼” baseboard. With taller doors, shorter baseboards can appear out of scale. In order to combat that, going for a taller baseboard will help ensure a balanced and intentional design.

The Universal Fit: 7 ¼”

If you’re looking for something that works across all door heights, 7 ¼” is the sweet spot. Most standard door bottom rails measure between 8” and 9”, making this height perfect for a clean, harmonious transition between your door and baseboard. It won’t over power the standard doors like 80” tall, nor will it look too short on the taller doors like 96”.

Exception: Modern Minimalist Look

With the Modern Flat and Modern Groove profiles, the 5 ½” baseboard is the go to even for taller doors. The slim, understated design makes them versatile and consistent with minimalist interior styles. The whole point is not to have anything stick out while keeping the function of a baseboard.

Step 3: Consider the Material

While design and size are essential, don’t overlook the material of your baseboards. The right material ensures durability, ease of installation, and long-term performance.

We offer high-quality solid American poplar baseboards in that are:

  • Smooth and paint-ready

  • Durable against dents
  • Won’t bubble with moisture unlike MDF products
  • Easy to cut and install
